Fulfillment centers are the first stop for an Amazon package. A sortation center is where Amazon determines the logistics for getting packages to consumers. A delivery station, the last stop, is the place where packages are unloaded from trucks and assigned for delivery to the customer. Normally, Amazon works with independent Amazon Flex drivers who deliver products from delivery centers to individual homes and businesses.
What types of jobs do Amazon fulfillment center workers do?
Amazon workers perform many different types of jobs, including the following:
- Stower. This worker receives items from retailers, distributors, and other sources and places them in storage pods. Each Amazon stower unboxes the items that come in and places them in bins located inside the pods.
- Picker. This job involves taking “stowed items that have been earmarked for shipment from pods, placing them in carts, and sending them off to the packers.” This is a very physical job that involves a lot of walking. Pickers must “maintain a minimum pick (scan) rate.”
- Packer. This worker receives the “picked” item, puts it in boxes/mailers/jiffies, and sends it to ship dock departments for loading into trucks.
- Waterspider. This worker helps other warehouse associates “replenish resources” for the other workers.
- Other Amazon jobs. These jobs include:
- “Problem solvers”
- Inventory control and quality assurance workers
- Learning ambassadors who teach new employees and managers
- SLAM (scan, label, apply, and manifest) workers who use SLAM machines to ensure packages have the correct labels
